Tired of worrying about your dentures sliding while you eat or speak or becoming loose at inopportune times? Did you know that you can switch to implant-secured dentures? With implant-secured dentures, leave the hassle of wiggling or shifting dentures behind. A dental implant is an artificial root that is surgically placed into the jawbone. The jawbone will grow around the implant in a process known as osseointegration. During osseointegration, the bone fuses to the implant to form an extremely strong bond much like the bond between natural teeth and bone. This connection between the implant and the bone provides stability to the implant and the dentures which it supports. Dr. Maria and Dr. Thanasi Loukas have participated in years of hands-on training in dental implants including implant-secured dentures. They utilize the latest technology to provide stellar dental care in a friendly, comfortable environment.
What to Expect at the Implant Procedure
Our doctors will evaluate your teeth and gums to determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants. Sometimes, a bone graft is performed if your jawbone isn’t thick enough or is too soft to support implants. Because chewing and biting exerts force on the bone, the bone must be substantial enough to withstand considerable pressure. After preparing your gums for surgery, the doctors will insert two to four implants in the lower or the upper jaw. Dr. Maria and Dr. Thanasi will then adjust the denture so that it can rest on top of the implants while the jaw heals. During the 2 to 4 month healing period, the bone forms to the implant posts to create a sturdy foundation for your denture. Once the healing has completed, the doctors will use special attachments to secure the denture to the implants.
Benefits of Implant-Secured Dentures
Dental implants are easy to care for and maintain. Unlike removable dentures, they do not require extra care; rather, treat them like you would treat your normal teeth with daily brushing and flossing. Dr. Maria and Dr. Thanasi also encourage regular check ups every six months so that they can monitor the implants. Implant-secured dentures do not shift or slide in your mouth but remain fixed and reliable. This may allow you to chew, speak, and smile without worry. Because they are fixed, they also do not chafe or irritate your mouth as removable dentures may.
